THE COMPARATIVE NUTRITION DATABASE (CND)

The Comparative Nutrition Database (CND) is a resource and research tool for the international zoological community on diets fed to captive animals. This searchable database is a compilation of zoo animal diets submitted by participating zoological institutions.

Within the CND is a "Commissary Program" that allows participating institutions to organize and create a searchable database of diet records. In addition, there is a food calculator that assists in daily to yearly food amounts from the commissary to the exhibit level. All diet records are searchable to any participant in the CND. Commissary records, however, are only available to the institution that has created those records.

The CND was designed and developed by Deborah McWilliams and Michel Delorme and programming was provided by Nicolas Des Alliers.

ACCESS TO THE CND

Your access to the CND database is available only by username and password to participants. Participants of the CND must be a zoological institution or organization housing captive wildlife that submit at least 50% of their diets for inclusion in the CND. Special arrangements for access are available to educational institutions and students.

IMPORTANT USER INFORMATION AND TERMS OF USE

  1. Entry of any diet or ingredient in the CND does not indicate recommendation and endorsement of that diet or ingredient by CAZA-NARG.
  2. CAZA-NARG recognizes, in the international zoological community, that dietary protocols may differ on the basis of food availability and the professional and financial ability of an individual zoo.
  3. All diets submitted for the CND are reviewed and CAZA-NARG is responsible for data input only. The diet review may require correspondence with the submitting institution. Diet review does not include any judgement based on moral, fashionable or political factors.
  4. CAZA-NARG recognizes that many species held in zoological institutions do not have formal nutritional recommendations by professional animal nutritionists and/or animal nutrition organizations.
  5. Once a diet is entered into the CND by CAZA-NARG, all participating zoological institutions are responsible for editing their diets when they are revised at their zoo. Revisions will not be reviewed for data accuracy by CAZA-NARG. When a diet is updated, the date of that revision is automatically recorded by the database. The most current revision date will be displayed at the lower, left page of the diet sheet when viewed.
IF YOU HAVE QUESTIONS OR CONCERNS ABOUT A DIET OR DIET COMPONENT IN THE CND:
  1. Each zoo participating in the CND has a contact person whose name and contact information is available within the database. A goal of the CND is to educate and increase cooperation and information exchange between zoos. Please contact that person and explain your concern(s) or question(s).
